San Jose Clinic Sealant Day 10-20-2012

Saturday October 20th 2011, Greater Houston Dental Hygienist’s Society joined with San Jose Clinic and students from HCC and UT to put on their bi-annual “Sealant Day”. 34 volunteers and the staff of San Jose Clinic together were able to place 316 sealants on 90 kids in 2 ½ hours.  In-Kind value of services amounted to $16,000. Patterson donated supplies and sealant material was donated by ‘Sealants Across America’. Goodie bags given to the kids contained a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and sugar free gum provided by Crest & Oral-B, Butler and Wrigely.  A variety of pamphlets were given out at an informational booth that was set up in the waiting room.  This allowed the parents to get information on sealants while they waited.  Pamphlets were obtained for free from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Rose Elementary Health Fair 10-13-2012

On October 13, 2012, Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society participated at Heritage Rose Elementary Health Fair from 10am-12pm.  We were assisted by  first and second year Dental Hygiene students from UT School of Dentistry, who took time out of their busy school schedule and did a marvelous job of giving back to the community.  The students manned two educational stations which were visited by about 200 participants including kids and their parents.  At one station, they provided a very valuable lesson of differentiating between "Good snacks" and "Bad snacks" to the kids, with the help of a fun interactive game of "Meal of Fortune".  At the second station, they demonstrated proper brushing and flossing techniques to kids and their parents.  The participants were rewarded with toothbrush, and floss donated by Colgate and UT.  Participants also received sugar free gum donated by Orbit, in honor of National Dental Hygiene Month.  The kids were awarded Diplomas on successful completion of both lessons.  Thanks to the efforts of the UT students, Chand Singh, Fouzia Mohammad, Phoebe Laurent, Veronica Cordon, Shamsha Ali, Ami  Sanchez, Chou Leav, Kristi Wagens, and Kadie Rowe, the Heritage Rose Health Fair was very successful.  Thanks to Victoria Patrounova, RDH, MHA, Clinical Assistant Professor at UT School of Dentistry, for organizing the students for this event.

Cub Scout Troop #797 Dental Hygiene Meeting

On the wonderfully cool Sunday morning of October 7th, 2012, Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society visited Troop #797.  Rafiq Hashmani asked GHDHS to talk to the scouts about oral hygiene.  The Tigers (first graders) and the Wolves (second graders) listened to Lynn Ly RDH talked about how plaque causes cavities and how we remove plaque.  The 25 cub scouts then divided up into Tiger and Wolves to learn at the two educational stations set up by GHDHS.  At one station Ushma Ramaiya RDH hosted the "Meal-of-Fortune" game that puts a fun spin on cariostatic versus cariogenic snacks.  At the other station Lynn Ly RDH demonstrated brushing and flossing.  This was followed by Nisa Hashmani RDH handing out charts for the scouts to keep track of their brushing.  Once the scouts had completed their stations, the Tigers and Wolves gathered back around to receive their diplomas and goodie bags.  Nisa Hashmani RDH bought Halloween toothbrushes and tooth brush caps for the goodie bags.  Afterwards, the cub master, Karishma, and the scouts thanked GHDHS for their excellent program with a scout clap.

Back-to-School Health Fair

Ibn Sina hosted a Back-to-School Health Fair Friday August 24, 2012 at their Wilcrest Pediatric Clinic location.  They invited Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society to present a table including educational pamphlets on one end and the "Meal-of-Fortune" on the other.  The children and their parents all enjoyed using this enticing game to learn about snacks that are healthy for their teeth.  We handed out toothpaste provided by Crest so all visitors of the health fair could enjoy free samples. This is a great example of how the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society is acting in the community to provide information about prevention of caries, the most prevalent infectious disease among children of our nation.
